Group X Buzz
Functional Training, it’s the Buzz – Something for Everyone There is something to be said when you correlate the J’s group exercise programming with the association that there is strength in numbers. A growing amount of released research supports that working out in a group proves to be extremely beneficial. A popular study performed at Oxford University on a group of rowers has shown that the rowers are stronger and fitter after group training as opposed to individual training. The research set out to determine whether endorphins affected people who trained together in a group (verses) solo. The study suggests that endorphins were responsible for increasing the productivity and pain tolerance during the group sessions, thus making the training more effective and enjoyable. Endorphins are natural pain killers that, when released in the brain, result in feelings of pleasure or elation. Consequently, this study partly explains the reasons why exercise enthusiasts often prefer group training. The Oxford study shows that when working out in a synchronized physical activity, the group dynamic setting triggers a bonding effect that in turn creates a sense of happiness. Carol Scott, President of East Coast Alliance, and one of the leading fitness experts on group fitness, reminds her audiences that there is much to be said for working out in groups. “It is not everyday that you can get a group of people to pedal together in a dark room on a stationary bike.” When you reflect on that statement, it is easy to conclude that group exercise programming is powerful.
