Shan's Spark: Lift Heavier. Live Stronger.

Lifting Heavier, Not Just Lifting Heavy

As we get older, we often hear the advice: "Lift heavy." While the intention is good, I think there's a better approach: Focus on lifting heavier, not simply lifting heavy.

There is a difference.

Lifting heavily/heavier implies that everyone should aim for a certain amount of weight. Lifting heavier means gradually becoming stronger than you were last month. If your joints feel good, you're eating enough protein, and you're recovering well, adding a little more weight over time can be one of the best things you do for your long-term health.

No matter your age, strength gains, muscle growth, fat loss, bone health, and overall wellness are heavily influenced by three things:

  • Progressive strength training
  • Adequate protein
  • Quality sleep

If your goal is to age gracefully, live a healthy life with purpose, and continue showing up for the people you love, here are my top three tips:

1. Understand the Lifts You're Doing

Don't rely solely on social media for fitness advice. Ask a professional or someone who has trained consistently for years and has a healthy relationship with fitness. Ask them what exercises were hardest to learn, which ones they once disliked, and why they still do them today. Often, the exercises we avoid become some of the most beneficial.

2. Stop Comparing Yourself

Stop trying to look like you did twenty years ago. And stop comparing your progress to someone else's. Everyone's body, history, and circumstances are different. The only comparison that really matters is whether you're making healthier choices than you were before. As the saying goes, comparison is a thief of joy.

3. Prioritize Protein and Sleep

Want to lift heavier? Start by focusing on recovery. Protein provides the building blocks your body needs to repair and grow. Sleep gives your body the time to do that work. Think of protein and healthy foods as the materials for building a house. Sleep is construction time. If either is missing, the final product won't be as strong as it could be.

Shan’s Final Thought

Aging well isn't about proving how much weight you can lift. It's about maintaining and improving your strength so you can continue living the life you want. Instead of asking, ‘How heavy should I lift?’ ask yourself: ‘Am I stronger than I was last month?’ If the answer is yes, you're moving in the right direction. Keep lifting heavier, taking care of your body, and investing in your future self.
