Shan's Spark: Unleash Your Inner Strength

The fitness industry has been evolving and evolving for the better.

One of the most meaningful shifts has been the growing number of women embracing strength training. The outdated belief that women should avoid lifting or building muscle has been firmly left behind.

Today, women are claiming their space in the weight room, pursuing strength on their own terms, and feeling confident in that choice. And they should. Every woman has the right to be as strong as she wants to be.

Here at The J, we are proud to support that evolution.

Recently, a member shared a concern about fairness and comfort on the fitness floor, particularly when it comes to sharing equipment and space. It is an important conversation and one we want to approach thoughtfully, not reactively.

To do that well, we first have to understand why people show up at the gym in the first place.

Routine Doesn't Need to Feel Routine

For some, it is physical strength. For others, it is stress relief, confidence, longevity, mental clarity, or simply carving out an hour for themselves in the middle of busy lives. When we understand our own why, it becomes much easier to recognize that everyone around us has one too, and that those purposes deserve the same respect as our own.

It is easy to slip into our own zone when we work out. Headphones on. Focus narrowed. That focus can be powerful. But when we lose awareness of the people around us, we lose the opportunity to create something greater than an individual workout.

At The J, our goal is not simply movement. It is meaningful community.

A strong fitness community is built on understanding. Understanding that not everyone enters the gym with the same confidence, comfort level, or experience. Understanding that strength training belongs to everyone. And understanding that small acts of awareness, like sharing equipment, being mindful of time and space, or offering patience instead of assumption, can completely shape how someone feels walking into the gym.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day season, it also feels especially meaningful to reflect on where many of us first learned what strength truly looks like.

For many, strength was modeled long before we ever stepped into a gym by mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers who carried families, balanced responsibilities, adapted through challenges, and kept showing up day after day. Their strength may not always have looked physical, but it shaped us all the same.

When women feel supported in building physical strength today, they are not just investing in themselves. They are helping redefine strength for the next generation watching closely from the sidelines, the stroller, the lobby, or right beside them.

When purpose is clear, community follows more naturally.

We share space because we understand it matters.
We make room because we remember what it felt like to begin.
We lead with empathy because we recognize ourselves in others.

Community is often something people hope for, but true community is something we actively practice. Here at the J, we strive to practice it intentionally every day. By staying open to the evolving fitness landscape and by approaching one another with awareness and respect, we create an environment where everyone can thrive.

This Mother’s Day season, let us remember that strength is not only something we build. It is something we model.

“Change happens when change happens.”
